We prioritise our work according to the requirements of our clients.  This works well for our clients and us as it sets realistic expectations according to the situation. 

We like to set expectations and beat them. Our system of prioritisation is as follows.....

 PRIORITY 1 WORK - THE WORLD IS MELTING
   
Your situation is business critical - your web server has come down, you can't take orders, a phone number on a mailer going to print has changed, the world is about to collapse around your ears.
Whether through an emergency fire or due to accidentally poor planning you need help - and you need it NOW! 
We drop everything at once and come running to your immediate aid.  We won't be charging over a hill on white chargers but the effect is pretty close.  Please note we will always come to the aid of clients - EG a phone call at 5:30pm on a Friday with a Saturday 9:00 am deadline will probably incur additional charges - we've seen this happen, we realise it happens and will always rise to  the challenge...  It's 9:00pm Christmas eve and Santa's sleigh breaks down and he realises he forgot to order toys for all French Boys and Girls.... This needs sorting and NOW!
 Priority 2 Work - This could be an issue
   
You need something urgently - it will impact your business if it is not done pretty soon.
However, the world won't melt if it is not completed instantaneously
We will schedule the work in for the next 2-3 working days. 

A deadline for priority 1 escalation is set.  Setting expectations.
Rudolph has a cold and it's a couple of days before Christmas.  The sleigh is slightly rusty and needs a polish and the Amazon order is still nowhere to be seen. The elves carve some wooden ducks - just in case....
 Priority 3 Work - Makes for happy Elves.
   
The work is planned out and scheduled in.  We have balanced work loads, happy staff and a smooth life....
The work is planned out and scheduled - We have both agreed expectations on project timelines and neither party has padded the time.  Deadlines for Priority 1 and 2 status are set with agreed padding for unexpected circumstances - which do happen.
Its Jan 1 and Santa sits down with his Elves, Congratulates them on another fine Christmas and starts planning...
     
Please note our prioritisation system doesn't mean "Are you too busy to take additional work" it means that we like to set expectations and beat them.
